Vietnam football team added another bronze to their country’s medal tally, after winning 5-0 against Indonesia at the National Stadium on Monday, 15 June.Vietnam performed better in the 28th Southeast Asia Games (SEA GAMES), as compared to the past two seasons. Vietnam did not even make it to the bronze medal match in the 2013 Games, and they lost to Myanmar in the 2011 Games.
Mac Hong Quan (17) scoring the first goal for Vietnam in the 14th minute through penalty kick for Indonesia’s player handball offence. Within the next 7 minutes, Vo Huy Toan (25) scored another goal for Vietnam. It was a glorious moment for the team, the goal scorer, smiling widely took out a small flag from his socks and flashed it to the camera. At the same time, the big Vietnam flag was raised from the spectators stand.
In the 41st minute, Vo Huy Toan scored his second goal and Nguyen Huu Dung (2) scored another goal just 5 minutes later during the extra time, securing Vietnam a lead of 4-0 at half time.
The last goal scored by Vietnam was from captain Que Ngoc Hai (15) in the 71st minute with a sharp shot to make it 5-0.
On the other hand, the last two matches was a straight disappointment for 2013 SEA Games football runners up, team Indonesia. In the 78th minute, Indonesia’s player Syaifulloh Muchlis Hadi Ning had the opportunity to score without any defenders in the way, however his shooting timing was off. The Indonesians’ right flank was also not well defended, giving the Vietnamese to score twice from the left.
When asked about the reason behind Indonesia being thrashed badly, coach Santoso Aji mentioned that it was difficult to improve the mentality of the players after their lost against Thailand two days ago, on top of the disappointment and uncertainty of their future after the SEA Games due to the FIFA ban. Moreover, the Indonesians only had 20 days of preparation prior to the games.
Lastly, Vietnam coach Toshiya Miura noted that the fans might not be satisfied that they did not make it to the finals, but he is still proud of his team’s performance.
Both teams finally concluded all the games after 3 weeks of playing. The top goal scorers for Vietnam and Indonesia are Huy Toan with 5 goals and Evan Dimas Darmono with 4 goals respectively.
