What is Harlem Shake? The dance itself is defined by Urban Dictionary as ‘An eccentric upper body dance move that involves the shaking of the upper torso and shoulders.’ Harlem Shake first introduced in 1981 by a Harlem, New York City resident named “Al Bm,” the dance was initially referred to as “albee” after his name, but later became known as the Harlem Shake as its prominence grew beyond the neighborhood. Harlem Shake is also the title of a 2012 heavy bass instrumental track produced by Baauer. In February 2013, Harlem Shake refers to an Internet meme. The meme first started is attributed to a silly video from a video blogger named "Filthy Frank". The song spawned a series of dance videos that begin with a masked individual doing the Harlem Shake alone in a group before suddenly cutting to a wild dance party featuring the entire group. The newest dance sensation, the "Harlem Shake" is taking over the web and everyone – including Singaporeans – is doing it. Media companies and school students jumped on the bandwagon, uploading videos of themselves dancing to the beat of Harlem Shake. I guess I will do the Harlem Shake dance too....

Hey there! Chinese New Year is here already! I guess I am one of the many people enjoying the long holidays. I stayed up late for the entire night to countdown to Chinese New year 2013! All I did was watching the LNY Eve Special on Channel 8. There was even a special appearance by the cast from Ah Boys To Men. They sang Recruit Anthem ( 新兵正传) & a CNY song (爆竹一声大地春). For those who missed the performance last night, here is it! I woke up around 10 am on CNY Day 1. Then I proceeded on going around Singapore to visit relatives. I wore a yellow polo t-shirt with a bermudas,so that I will not get scolding from my relatives. Generally, clothes in bright and warm colours will not go wrong. Tips:For the ladies, if you wish to show off your svelte figure, you can even consider wearing the qi pao/cheongsam. There are also modified modern variations of these traditional attire, which are more comfortable yet no less stylish. I brought a pair of mandarin oranges. It was presented to my grandmother, holding one in each hand, upon arrival with an auspicious greeting . Mandarin oranges symbolize wealth. It is also coincidence that in Cantonese, the mandarin orange is called 'gam', which rhymes with gold.Another pair of mandarin oranges will be returned by the host. This act symbolises the circulation of good fortune. As usual, eating will definitely take place.I had lunch over at grandmother's house. Besides that, there were a spread of sumptuous New Year goodies, cookies and sweets for everyone to savour. No wonder there is a saying that people will grow fat after CNY... Being a Cantonese family, we must definitely Lo Hei! Huat Ah! Of course, I will never forget to collect my AngBaos! In my family, red packets are given out in pairs, because good things come in pairs.I accepted them graciously with a smile and a thank you, and kept them in my pockets. It is considered rude to open up the red packet on the spot to check the amount inside. Also, something special that my cousin taught me: What do I say when I get my angbaos? Ang Bao On! that was actually inspired by Dee Kosh! HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! HUAT AH!
Long ago, the world was not a safe place; monsters dominated the world. There was one horrifying monster that came out on the same day each year to eat people. This monster was named Nian, and the people marked the end of a year by his visits to the human civilization. That is where the Chinese word for year came from.
This monster was the most feared by the people because every time it came out, whole villages would be destroyed at a time. So, every time the monster came, people would huddle together in their homes and stay up all night, wanting not to be eaten. This happened for many years until a wise man thought up a plan to scare the monster away. This man proposed that the people should light bamboo. The bamboo would crack and make a lot of noise, possibly scaring the monster away. The villagers thought this was a very good idea and started to light the bamboo. The noise was tremendous. The monster was scared by the loud noise and ran back to its cave without not eating any people. The next morning, everyone was present. They were all elated. The people congratulated each other for executing the plan effectively. So, from then on, people stayed up late, lit firecrackers (to simulate the lighting of the bamboo), and congratulated each other when the new year came.
