Over the weekend, I just went over to a café in Haji Lane named ''I AM".
I AM is a Muslim-owned café set up by three brothers. It is not a typical café, but an Amsterdam-themed café that serves yummy western style dishes and desserts. The café has an open air dining concept like the ones in Amsterdam with a lot of natural light shining in. One of the easy to spot feature of the cafe is a large black-and-white mural of one of the many bridges and canals in bicycle-friendly Amsterdam. They are located just before the entrance of Haji Lane, along North Bridge Road and just opposite the Golden Landmark Shopping Complex, a 10 minutes walk from Bugis MRT Station.
From student point of view, I would say the price of the food is little pricey.Nevertheless, the cafe is still popular among many youths and young working adults. I decided to give the cafe a try, after all good food comes with a price.
I ordered Charcoal-Grilled Juicy Beef Burger(SGD 12.90) and my friend got the Fish Burger (SGD 10.90) as our main meal. As for the drinks, I got a non-alcoholic cooler drink: virgin Lychee Mojito (SGD 6.90); and my friend had Honeymooney (SGD 6.90). Lastly for the desserts, we both shared Red Velvet Cake and Rainbow Mille crêpe .
Beef burger came with two toasted buns, a thick beef patty, melted cheese and a slice of pineapple. The well seasoned patty was juicy and had a nice texture, where every bite gave me a great taste of the ingredients used. If you love beef then this is definitively right up your alley! It was complimented by the addition of cheese and pineapple to add an extra flavour to the dish. Another point is that the bun is toasted to perfection together with a serving of tasty fried potato wedges. You really should go try it sometime! No doubt about that!
Fish Burger was so good until it make my friend wonder if he ever had a Fish Burger that tasted any better than this one. the burger wasn't soggy like the ones served at fast food restaurants! And the freshly-caught Dory fish was cooked to perfection! the batter wasn't too salty or thick, together with mayonnaise and cheese, led to the combination to taste very good. The dish was also served with a side of potato wedges and tomato sauce.
Virgin Lychee Mojito drink was served cold with mint leaf and the real fruit in it.The lychee gave out its extra sweet flavour whereas the mint leaf gave out the fresh minty smell. I would consider this drink a little sweet, with most of its flavour from lychee syrup. The combination of mint and lychee was my favourite on a hot Sunday afternoon,as it was very refreshing and cooling. The Honeymooney drink on the other hand was nothing special, but it was overly sweet. I guess this drink is more suitable for those with sweet tooth.
Red Velvet Cake is a six layered cake, best recommended to share it with a buddy. The cake is fluffy and light, chilled with cheesy cream as icing. This cake is definitely one of the best cakeI ever tatsed. As for the Rainbow Mille crêpe, the name already suggest that it is very colourful; amazingly it does taste so sweet. By the way all their baked goods are baked in-house by their own talented cooks.
After a 2.5 hrs dining, our stomach were completely filled with sumptuous food. A full man is a happy man.
Throughout the whole dining experience,I am truly impressed by the service here! The owners and their team go out of their way to ensure they give you the best always. Their warm, personable service and friendly smiles elevate this stylishly hip cafe to an even more memorable place. This is definitely a place I’ll be back to for many more times to come.
