I stayed up late for the entire night to countdown to Chinese New year 2013! All I did was watching the LNY Eve Special on Channel 8. There was even a special appearance by the cast from Ah Boys To Men. They sang Recruit Anthem ( 新兵正传) & a CNY song (爆竹一声大地春). For those who missed the performance last night, here is it!
I wore a yellow polo t-shirt with a bermudas,so that I will not get scolding from my relatives. Generally, clothes in bright and warm colours will not go wrong.
Tips:For the ladies, if you wish to show off your svelte figure, you can even consider wearing the qi pao/cheongsam. There are also modified modern variations of these traditional attire, which are more comfortable yet no less stylish.
I brought a pair of mandarin oranges. It was presented to my grandmother, holding one in each hand, upon arrival with an auspicious greeting . Mandarin oranges symbolize wealth. It is also coincidence that in Cantonese, the mandarin orange is called 'gam', which rhymes with gold.Another pair of mandarin oranges will be returned by the host. This act symbolises the circulation of good fortune.
Also, something special that my cousin taught me: What do I say when I get my angbaos? Ang Bao On! that was actually inspired by Dee Kosh!
