In a flash, the train arrived at the station without sparing a thought for others getting off the train; some commuters started “charging” into the train carriage, elbowing themselves through the crowd. I waited by the side for commuters to get off before squeezing into the carriage and got in just before the door slammed shut. I thought I was lucky. But.....
It was the peak hour and it was no wonder that the train was packed like sardines. The train was moving at a very fast speed. The train was like rushing through the gates of hell. Train stations passes in the wink of an eye while more and more people got in and out of the train. I was waiting for my station to arrive as I held onto the railings. Laughter and chattering filled the air. Despite the fact that everything seemed normal, I had an ominous premonition that something was going to happen.
“Next station...”Just when the announcement for the next station was about to be made, the train stopped and the lights went off.. My heart skipped a beat. My face immediately became pale as white as a sheet of paper. Piercing shrieks and shouts replaced the laughter and chattering. At the beginning, I could see nothing except black and could feel many hands groping around trying to find their way. My heart was palpitating louder than usual and my hands turned clammy. Apparently, the air-conditioning had also broken down. I was perspiring profusely but I still manage to stand the sweltering heat.
“It must be haunted! The next station is Novena!” My first thought. Did you know that a large part of land of which the Novena station is built on was once a sprawling Jewish cemetery. I swear that I will see ghost later. “ Must be a minor circuit-break,”I tried to confront myself. “It's nothing serious,”I told myself again. I decided to wait for the light to be restored and for an announcement to be made over the public address system.
I waited . But nothing was heard and the scene remained as chaotic as before. I began to panic and a million “what ifs” flooded through my mind “ what if no one comes to rescue us?” “What if a train running down the track rams into us?” “ What if...” At that juncture, a pungent smell broke my train of thoughts. I tried to search for the source of the smell and it led me to the block of the train. I saw orange, red sparks. I smelt it once again and a sudden thought dawned on me. A fire had broken out!
“HAHA!” You are in my trap! Say goodbye to your family and friends now!” A voice from nowhere said. At that moment there was a pin drop silence. Everyone was frantic with worry. At the same moment, a white figure appeared. A cold chill ran down my spine when I saw the white figure. “ All of you will be burn to death!” the voice said again. “ARRRH!” I shouted.
A small and weak fire can become bigger and stronger. The fire may spread quickly and kill many passengers. I had to do something before the fire started spreading. I shouted at the top of my voice, “People! A fire has broken out! Please...” Before I could finish my sentence, pandemonium broke out. Commuters started hitting emergency buttons and charged towards the emergency exit of the train. But the train emergency doors could not open even with force. To my horror, I saw Jewish spirit of the dead was blocking all the train doors.
The next moment, everyone was feeling very giddy. Out of sudden, some passengers floated in mid- air. Zombies roamed into the train carriage. It was thousands of zombies. Each passenger was attached to one zombie. The zombies check on all passengers' movement, so no one could escape from the train.
I wanted everyone to be safe. I decided to call the local fire brigade for help. The fiery tongues of the fire slowly engulf the train. Suddenly, I heard an audible scream coming from the back of the train. Curiosity kills the cat and it piqued me to investigate further. I took my courage to walk to the back of the train when I knew I would face a lot of trouble. I traced the scream to its source and spotted a toddler crying. Without hesitation, I carried him and raced towards the emergency door.
In a flash, the fire brigade arrived at the scene and they got down to work almost immediately. The light from the firemen torch chased the spirits away. As we know, they are scared of lights. In fact, it was a small fire only. The scary things that I saw was caused by the spirits from the haunted Novena Station. Some firemen started to put out the fire with hoses attached to underground pipes in seconds. Others evacuated us to safety. We followed them in an orderly manner and walked towards the Novena station.
Upon reaching safe ground, I was still clutching the toddler's hand. Out of the blue, I heard a shrill voice amidst the noise, hollering, “ Tim! Tim, where are you?” The toddler beside me reacted instantly and I guessed that it was his mother looking for him. We followed the voice. Out of sudden, the toddler disappeared into mid-air. I had just held a toddler spirit hand!
“How can I ever repay you?” Someone said in a voice full of gratitude. The voice was weird. It was a spirit mother talking!
“It is okay. Just remember to take care of your son,”I replied.
After our conversation ended, I decided that it was time for me to head home by bus.
The next day, the incident was reported in the headlines. It turned out that the cause of the fire and blackout was due to technical fault and that the authorities were still investigating the matter. As you all know, it must be caused by scary spirit. After reading the papers, I reflected on that harrowing event. It has told me that traveling in an underground train is scary.
